Our Daily Diary Notes - February 2008

02/28/2008 - Today I hit a Royal Straight Flush in Spades playing $1-2 No-Limit Hold'em at Green Valley. I got $250 for the royal and about $250 in the pot for a total win of $500. It was a nice afternoon.

02/27/2008 - I think spring is here. Today was just another beautiful day in the lower 70's. We spent a couple of hours reading out by the pool working on our suntans. Even though the pool is still a little "cool", the spa felt wonderful. Hopefully we will be doing this on a regular basis from here on. Well, I must be getting old! Yesterday I went down and applied for my Social Security Retirement. It won't be much as there is one of those "quirks" in the law that reduces my SS check because I was a government employee - go figure. But, with the rising prices in everything these days, every little bit helps. The rise in my health insurance premiums this year nearly wiped out the entire cost-of-living raise in my retirement check this year. Golden years my ass!

02/25/2008 - The sky was clear and sunny and the temperature was up to 65 this morning, so I headed to the outside spa and pool. After a nice relaxing time in the spa, I spent the next couple of hours getting into the book I started a few days ago. It was just beautiful. Reminds us of one of the many advantages of living in Las Vegas. New England got 6" of snow and ice this past week and Tommy, in Tahoe, got 18" yesterday.

02/24/2008 - In between our daily bouts of dining out and playing slots and poker, we spent the last five days watching Tiger Woods win his 63rd career victory at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Arizona, which moved him past Arnold Palmer into fourth place alone on the PGA Tour's career list. Even though he pummeled Cink in the 36-hole final, it was amazing to watch him come from 3 down with five holes to play against J.B. Holmes in the opening round Wednesday by wining four straight holes with three birdies and a 35-foot eagle, the signature putt over five days at Dove Mountain. On Friday it appeared that Aaron Baddeley had him on the ropes, but Tiger pulled it out with a birdie on the 20th hole. It was just an amazing 5 days of golf watching, no doubt, the greatest golfer ever.

02/21/2008 - I've been spending a lot of time lately working on the computer, cleaning up my hard drives and making yearly backups. As a result, I've been in kind of a reading slump. Today I started reading "The Fourth Order" by Stephen Frey . The weather this past week has been in the 60's causing most of the trees to begin budding. That's right, mid-February - try that in New England. Before we know it we will be making our morning treks to the pool for a little tanning and reading time.

02/19/2008 - Well, I guess today marks another one of those lifetime milestones, I spent part of the morning filing for my Social Security. I guess the good news is that I'm not 67 yet, but that I'm filing for early collection at 62. Having been living the retired lifestyle now for nearly 12 years, I must say without doubt, that I made the right decision taking an early retirement from the Shipyard. It would be my recommendation to anyone, "retire as early as you can and begin to enjoy life."

It's official, Connie is a Great Aunt. Cayden Campbell was born Tuesday February 19, at Memorial Herman Hospital, The Woodlands Texas, at 5:04PM, Weighing in at 7.7 lbs @ 19.5 inches. with full head of hair and eyes wide open. Our best wishes to Marisa.

02/17/2008 - Today we pretty much sat around reading, watching golf and the Daytona 500. In the late afternoon we went to a friends house for some wine and appetizers and some great homemade beef stew. Connie made the cornbread. We topped the dinner off by watching two movies (Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Superman Returns) on his big wide-screen TV.

02/14/2008 - For Valentine's Day we decided to have something red, so we went to the Tides Oyster Bar and each had a 1-1/4 lb boiled Maine lobster. Though not quite as good as the baked stuffed ones we had with Sol on our trip back to New Hampshire a lottle over a year ago, it was a great reminder ... again it was compliments of the house. Gotta love Vegas!

01/31/2008 - For Connie's birthday celebration we stayed overnight at Green Valley Ranch Casino in one of the business suites overlooking their backyard and pool. After spending a couple of hours at the Spa, we had a lovely dinner at Hank's, their premier Steakhouse ... all compliments of the house
