Our Daily Diary Notes - April 2008

04/26/2008 - Layed around the pool and read and talked with some neighbors, went to GVR and won some money gambling and the some friends took us out to dinner last night to a new Italian restaurant to treat us (late birthday gifts). It was excellent; probably the best Italian restaurant we've been to since we've been here. We can't wait to go back. Went back to their house for wine and dessert. It was just a beautiful evening. Sat around their back yard drinking wine, catching up and talking about the 'good 'ol days'.

04/24/2008 - Not much going on this past week. Today we went to the movie "88 Minutes" starring Al Pachino. Pacino plays a renowned forensic psychiatrist and college professor who works with the FBI profiling serial killers. One of his famous trials in which he gave expert testimony was the case of Jon Forster (Neal McDonough) aka "The Seattle Slasher". The day before Forster is scheduled to be executed; one of Gramms students is killed in Seattle in a "Modus-Operandi" that matches that of the "Seattle Slasher", meaning that if the "Seattle Slasher" is still killing women, then Forster must be an innocent man. Gramm believes that this murder is the work of a copycat killer, and he sets out to prove it. In the meantime, Gramm receives a threatening phone call that tells him that he has only 88 minutes to live. Gramm must solve the case before his time (88 minutes) runs out, "TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK". Though the "88" minutes was not enough to contain all that happened, it was still a pretty good movie.

04/22/2008 - Have spent the past several days setting up my new computer and installing my programs from backup disks. Naturally, not everything has been going as smoothly as it should. Probably the hardest factor is that it has the new Microsoft operating system Windows Vista, which is quite a bit different from XP which took me 6 years to learn all the "ins" and "outs". In addition, some of my older programs will not work on Vista. Great!

04/20/2008 - The operating system on my old computer "froze up". The computer "Geek Squad" at Best Buy said that it would cost between $200 and $400 to fix and they couldn't guarentee anything. Having had enough with problems over the past year or so, I said the heck with it and bought a new computer.

04/17/2008 - Went to the movie "Street Kings" starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker. Tom Ludlow (played by Reeves) is a veteran LAPD cop who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he's been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to question the loyalties of everyone around him. Though the Plot and story line were thin at times, it was filled with action from beginning to end and the acting was top-notch.

04/16/2008 - Had kind of a lazy day sitting around reading our books, watching a movie [Into The Wild] and some prerecorded TV shows. My friend Scott invited us over for marinated barbecued pork steaks. We think it was the first time we've had anything barbecued besides just hot dogs, hamburger or chicken since we moved here. It was delicious. After dinner we watched the debate between Hillery and Obama. We actually thought Hillery provided more substantive answers.

04/14/2008 - Connie received some pictures of family from Cheryl of her, Meaghan, her husband Rob and their son Cylus. They were the first pictures she had received of her great grandson and was extremely pleased.

04/09/2008 - After accomplishing some weekly errands, including our bi-weekly library run, we headed over to the Monte Lago Casino at Lake Las Vegas for a free "Wine and Cheese" gathering. Your choice of all you could drink wine (for two hours) and appetizers that included brochetta, egg rolls, vegetables, crackers and a variety of cheeses, plus live jazz. We didn't get there early enough to sit outside on the deck where the jazz group was playing, but will make sure we go earlier next time. They are doing this every Wednesday in April.

04/07/2008 - Had a friend call and offer to bring over a rotisserie chicken for dinner. We had just received a Netflix's CD of the standup comedian Galliger and enjoyed that over our dinner.

04/04/2008 - I've been listening to Tommy, Johnny, and my close friend Scott all say that they've finished their taxes and all have money coming back. Well, today was the day of reckoning. By the time I finished, I owed good 'ol Uncle Sam nearly $1500 dollars. So I guess the $1200 that I'm getting from the government will be used to "stimulate the government" to pay my taxes and not the economy as Bush had hoped.

04/02/2008 - It doesn't seem like another year has passed already, but seeing that several friends and relatives have either called or sent me birthday cards in the last few days, I guess there's no escaping it. At least this year I get a birthday present from the government; starting this month I will be receiving a small Social Security check for the rest of my life.

To celebrate, Connie and I went to the Steak House at Binion's Casino. It is located on the top floor of the casino and provides a panoramic view of the city. We had the Lobster Bisque for a starter, and both thought it was one of the best we have ever had, including anything in New England. This is the 4th time I've been there, and I still have to say that they have the best steak in town. We both had the Fillet Mignon Au Poivre w/a Cognac cream sauce. It was cooked to perfection and you could cut it with a fork.
