They didn't just beat the Lakers, they dismantled them! Connie and I hope you got a chance to see the game as it was certainly one of the best ever. It certainly reminded of the Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale days.
Blowing out the Lakers, the Celtics clinched their 17th NBA title, 4 games to two!
From last season's "worst record in franchise history" the best in the world in just one season - truly an unbelievable feat. In probably what was one of the best final NBA playoff games ever, the Celtics utterly outclassed a directionless Los Angeles Lakers team 131-92 to win their first title in 22 years.
The Celtics' "Big Three", Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce combined for 69 points to dominate the front court, Pierce also contributing 10 assists. Ray Allen had everyone on its feet as he lit up a freakish 7-of-9 from the three-point line for a total 26 individual points. The message from the Celtics bench was clear in the final quarter, as coach Doc Rivers rested his starters and gave his substitutes the opportunity to revel in the massive lead.
While the first quarter was neck-and-neck basketball that captivated a riotous Boston crowd, Pierce and the Celtics stepped it up a notch before the half-time break, laying on 34 points to the Lakers' 15. Young guard Rajon Rondo (21 points) seemed to have his hands in every play as he made six steals and eight assists. From there on out the Celtics employed a clinical pick-and-roll attack as they bolted to an unassailable lead that stayed over 28 points from half-time onwards and was a one point 41 points.
