Daily Diary Notes - "July"

07/31/2009 - Today we took a ride with out downstairs neighbors to Mt. Charleston for lunch. At 8,259 feet, Mt. Charleston is the eigth highest peak in the U.S. and the highest peaks in Southern Nevada. It is located less than an hours drive N/W of Los Vegas, and is usually 20 degrees cooler than Vegas. Today it was about 82 when we reached the top v.s. the 107 degrees in Vegas. As usual it was a nice ride up and with some very nice views. Lunch at the topside restaurant was just so-so. Typical type fast food with tourist prices to match. After we arrive back home we spent the remainder of the day packing for our trip to Lake Tahoe for Mom's birthday.

07/20/2009 - Did some work on the car and rand errands getting ready for our Tahoe trip. Printed up some (Goodrich) family pictures as well as some pictures of Bonnie, Tom and myself and placed them in two frame collages to give to mom for her birthday.

07/24/2009 - Looks like more possible showers today. The last couple of days we've had a little rain at night, but not enough to do much except raise the humidity. Today it is 58%; two days ago it was 64%. That is really high for us and as you can expect, not being used to it, we have really been suffering.

07/23/2009 - Yesterday we took a trip to Boulder City with our neighbor Marc to see the Bighorn Sheep that spend their days roaming around the park and hillsides down near Lake Meade. We were just amazed at how many there were. All total we must have seen about 25 of them roaming in the park and peoples yards. I put some of the pictures up on my Photo Gallery Site. Click here ...[ The Bookends ]. We had lunch at the Southwest Diner. We all had someting different and everything was very good. We couldn't believe that we have driven past this place numerous times and have never stopped in and eaten there before. We can't wait to go back.

07/22/2009 - Today we went to lunch at Johnny Rockets hamburger stand inside the Silverton Casino. Even though we had a 2-1 coupon it was a bit pricey, however it was one of the best hamburgers we've had in a long time. Afterward we went to the movies at the Southpoint Casino. We saw Public Enemies with Johnny Depp. Not a great movie, however enjoyable. Catch our review here ... Movie Review - "Public Enemies

07/20/2009 - Yesterday was an answer to prayer. We answered the doorbell only to find our two previous neighbors who had disappeared after the death of their mother on June 1st. As we suspected they just had a very hard time accepting mom's death and though that having notified one of their brothers in Wyoming, that he was going to come down and would have ended up making the appropriat arrangements for their mother. It turns out that they had been camping somewhere on Lake Meade all this time and that if we, or anyone else, had notified the parks department, we would have located them, as they and their car had been registered there all the time. Needless to say we were extremely glad to see that they were all right. We fed them, had them spend the night with us, had them notify family, and helped them decide what their next course of action should be. They both appeared much healthier and mentally calmed than we have ever seen them in the past. As it turns out, we feel they really needed the alone time to deal with everything and decide what they were going to do the rest of their lives.

07/19/2009 - We have spent the last four days watching 138th British Open Championship at Turnberry, Scotland. It had to be one of the most exciting tournaments we have ever watched. First of all, there was the disappointment that Tiger Woods, for one of the first times in his career, failed to make the cut. However that was quickly replaced by the fact Tom Watson, at 59 years old, took over first place and remained their right up until the last hole. The fact that Tom would have been the oldest person in any sport, basketball, baseball, boxing, tennis, etc. to ever win a major event at that age, made the fact that he came within a hair’s breadth of claiming his place among the game’s immortals when he failed to hole a 10-foot par putt on the 72nd green , a putt that would have ensured a sixth title in the world. The last green miss put him in a play-off with fellow American Stewart Cink and it proved a journey too far. Visibly tiring, his dream of a final victory over the same course where he won his second title in 1977 finally crumbled in thick rough to the left of the 17th fairway. He took two shots to escape the tangled growth and he stumbled to a sad finish, losing the play-off to a subdued Cink by six shots. 07/18/2009 - This was a very different day for us. We asked to be the witnesses at the wedding of our downstairs neighbors. After the wedding we drove them to the Conservatory at the Bellagio for some pictures and then went to the wine cellar at the "M" Casino for some pre-dinner drinks before heading to Veloce's, their excellant top floor restaurant, where we all enjoyed a fantastic meal. In fact, Connie ordered a lobster tail and they made a mistake and brought her two saying the second one would be "on the house". It turned out to be a lovely day and evening.

07/12/2009 - It has been so hot lately that Connie is not even coming to the pool in the morning and I have started coming back in by 11:00am due to the heat. Had a good one happen today. When Connie and I walked out to our car we looked up and it was GONE! Our mouths dropped open and we both said, "Oh shit. Did someone steal our car." I then looked down the row towards the next building and noticed my car, right where I parked it in front of my neighbors apartment when I brought him home from the airport the day before. What a dunce! After I talked with him for a while upon the return, I just walked that sidewalk home and forgot all about the car. Needless to say I've taken a little ribbing for that one.

07/11/2009 - Unlike the East Coast which has been expriencing way too much rain and cool weather, we are getting hit with nothing but sun and hot weather. This morning is was 98 degrees when we go up at 6:30am - supposed to hit 108 by days end, and the entire upcoming week is supposed to be over 110 degrees. The good new is that it is a "dry heat" I picked up a neighbor friend yesterday at the airport who was returning from a week in Florida. He said that even though it never got over 86 while he we there, that from the time he got out of the shower in the morning till the end of the day he was constantly drenched in sweat from the high humidity.

07/09/2009 - Thursday we spent the morning on the beach along the Colorado River, then had a 2-1 buffet lunch which we were not to pleased with and then headed back to Vegas. All-in-all it was a nice get-a-way that cost us next to nothing.

07/08/2009 - We enjoyed margurita's around their lovely pool and beach area in the morning and then went to see the movie, "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock in the afternoon. Again, we thought it was funny and really enjoyed. Spent the remainder of the day playing and then went back to our room and watched one of our favorite shows, "So You Think You Can Dance".

07/07/2009 - After using the pool in the morning we checked out and headed for the out two free nights at the AVI Casino in Laughlin. I won some money playing poker and decided to enter their evening tournament, however, got knocked out about halfway through. Our dinner was comped.

07/06/2009 - After our free buffet breakfasts, we headed to the pool for a little sun and to read our books. In the afternoon we went to the see the movie, "The Hangover" which in spite of the poor reviews, we enjoyed. Instead of using the 2-1 buffet tickets that came with our package we had dinner at the Primm Valley Resort Casino's steak house where they prepared our meals table side. It was excellent.

07/05/2009 - In the afternoon we packed car and head to Primm Valley and Laughlin for a five-day mini vacation. WOOPS! We forgot that it was the day after the Fourth and that everyone would be headed back to California. It took us 2-1/2 hours to drive what would have normally been 35 minutes. On top of that because the casino we were staying at was offering free rooms to "locals", it seemed that everyone in Vegas decided to go after the fourth. It took us until 9:00 pm to get our room. The good news was that we both won while we were waiting for the registration line to go down.

07/05/2009 - We spent the morning watching the Wimbleton Finals. Though the women's finals on Saturday didn't seem very exciting because it ended up being the two William's sisters vying for first and second place, neither of which we are great fans of, the men's final on te other hand was phenomenal. Going five sets, with over 75 aces served, 51 from Roger Federer, over 22 in the last 30 game 5th set by Federer alone, it was just unbelievable. We both thought that Andy Roddick played the better overall game, however it just wasn't his day, giving Federer his 6th Wimbleton title and his 15th overall slam win, making him by far the greatest tennis player ever. What a match.

07/04/2009 - FOURTH of JULY - This was one of the best 4th of July's we've had since we moved here. First of all we had a wind and rain storm the night before which made for a beautiful and relatively cool morning. We got up early and drove to Boulder City for a pancake breakfast, put on by their local Rotary, which was cooked in the middle of a beautiful city park.

After breakfast we found a nice cool spot under a huge oak tree to sit and watch their 4th of July parade. It reminded us of a typical small New England town parade. One unique thing was the "water floats" at the end of the parade. These were filled with people who had huge water guns that they "peppered" the people alongside of the street as they passed by. There were also people along the parade route who brought their own guns and buckets of water who shot back. It was really funny.

In the evening we went to the "M" Casino and had dinner at their signature Italian restaurant, Marinelli's. I made reservations for a table on their outside deck overlooking their pool area and the scheduled fireworks show. After just a wonderful meal, which only cost us a tip after comp, we got to finish our wine over one of the best fireworks shows we have seen since moving to Las Vegas. All in all it was a wonderful day
