REVIEW: This film was an original HBO movie based upon a true story. By its nature, it is a quiet and slow-moving movie, however it doesn't miss a single emotional pressure point -- Katz clearly believes in the power and necessity of catharsis. But "Taking Chance" is saved from patriotic sentimentality by its attention to detail and Kevin Bacon's outstanding performance. It's hard to imagine another actor who could carry this role so steadily. Bacon brings to this film the same thing that Strobl brought to Phelps' funeral -- the instant honor conferred by a high-ranking officer and the understanding that in war, every name on those grim lists is a heartbreak. Surely, then, it is our responsibility to ensure that our soldiers are cared for as well in life as they are in death. A very emotional movie. We both gave it [4-1/2 Stars]
SYNOPSIS: Based on an article by Marine Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, this film tells the story of Strobl's emotional experience traveling across America as a volunteer escort officer for the body of fallen 19-year-old marine Chance Phelps. Along the 2004 journey to Phelps' hometown in Wyoming, Strobl (portrayed by Emmy nominee Kevin Bacon) witnesses -- and is moved by -- acts of respect by everyday Americans.
