SYNOPSIS: "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. Though this is a very thin description of this psychological thriller, to tell you any more would spoil the show. This is one movie where you just have to go see it to find out what it is all about.
REVIEW: I have to admit that when it was over I really wasn't sure what I thought about it. My first comment was, "It sure was different." It is not riveting or spellbinding, yet definately has the creepy atmosphere that the previews portrayed. Ben Kingsley, who can always a little creepy in this type of movie, is excellant at portraying the chief psychiatrist. If you are a fan of director Martin Scorsese, as we are, you will not be disappointed. It definitely takes on an Alfred Hitchcock "feel" right from the beginning. Even though some of the movies' many flashbacks do tend to provide some insite into what is happening, I was unable to figure it out until the end when it was finally revealed. People will have mixed reviews on this one. It certainly will not go down as one of Scorsese's best works, however, in the final analysis we felt it was a gorgeously stylized psychological thriller that we certainly found entertaining. We gave it [3-1/2 Stars]
