Daily Diary Notes - September

09/30/2008 - We closed out September with a road trip to the Lost City Museum in Overton and the Valley of Fire. My friend Marc drove, so it made it quite enjoyable for Connie and I. After a nice big breakfast at Fiesta we headed East and North along Lake Meade towards Overton. The museum actually exceeded our expectations and had a great movie on the prehistoric culture of the Anasazi, who existed in prehistoric times throughout the northwest part of the Southwest US. We then headed to the Valley of Fire. Even though we had been there before, Marc showed us some new areas that "opened" up the park to us making it much better than our first visit. On the way home we stopped at Green Valley Ranch and all had the Crab legs buffet for dinner. Though long, it was a very nice day.

09/26/2008 - Today we attended the largest Classic Car Show in southern Nevada. This is an annual event held in Downtown Henderson’s Water Street District. The car show is open to all years, makes and models of classic vehicles, cars, trucks, motorcycles and special interest vehicles. There were well over 1000 vehicle, so many in fact, that we never got to see them all. After touring about three quarters of the displayed vehicle, we were too hot and tired to finish, as the temperature was about 102, 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

09/25/2008 - Today, my friend Marc and I worked on framing some of the craft items we have worked on over the past several months. Afterwards, we picked up Connie and went out to lunch and then to a movie, "Burn After Reading." Hard to describe, Kind of a dark comedy. Even though there were quite a few known actors in it, it was kind of a strange movie that not only was slow in many places, but it jumped around too much. We all agreed that we really wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

09/23/2008 - Today I spent the afternoon shooting pool (9-ball) with Ron, my downstairs neighbor. After loosing the first 4 games, I ended up beating him 14 games to 9. I guess my game is coming back a little, last week I beat my other friend Marc 28 to 11 in straight pool and 5 to 2 in nine ball. Tomorrow is craft day. Marc and I are using his cousin's garage to work on craft/art projects.

09/22/2008 - After getting some more x-rays last week, Connie had another appointment with her rheumatologist today. After examination and review he determined that she was suffering from bursitis of the hip and gave her a cortisone injection. So far the injection has not been as painful as many people suggested it might be. Let's hope that it helps relieve the inflammation and pain that has been getting worse and worse the past several months. Click here to read more about bursitis and cortisone. More ....

09/21/2008 - Today we are looking forward to the final day of the Ryder Cup golf tournament; U.S. vs Europe. The last couple of days has been some of the best match play I think we have ever seen. Last night we watched "Monster." Even though it was kind of a dark movie, the Oscar-winning performance of Charlize Theron was just superb.

09/18/2008 - Had a friend of Connie's over for drinks and appetizers, before taking her out to dinner at Bonefish, one of our favorite restaurants. It was kind of a "last supper" for Joan as she is going for another pre-operation test tomorrow that is supposed to last 5 hours; when means she will not be eating for about 20 hours. Finally got an email yesterday from Rick, Connie's brother in Houston, stating that they got their power back on Tuesday night from hurricane Ike. After seeing all the bad weather this year from the east coast to Florida, to the Gulf, we sure are glad to be here in sunny Nevada.

09/15/2008 - Tried calling Connie's brother in Houston to see how they made out during hurricane Ike and were unable to get through. Did get an email finally noting that they only ended up with some minor tree damage, but were still without power. Fortunately for us, we've had just absolutely beautiful weather for the past couple of weeks. Went over to a friend of Connie's for a late dinner of pizza and salad. Didn't get home until after nine which is late for us.

09/13/2008 - We tried a new restaurant today called "The Hilltop Cafe." After we got there we remembered that we had been there twice before, when it was an Italian restaurant. Don't really know if it was under new ownership or just "re-inventing" itself. The menu was certainly all new with a wide variety of fresh made items. We shared a lobster kabob for an appetizer, Connie had Meatloaf w/gravy, caramelized carrots and mashed potatoes, while I had a seafood pot pie. Though it is not inexpensive, everything was very good. After playing at GVR we were invited to a friend of Connie's for drinks, snacks, and conversation.

09/12/2008 - We both got a badly needed haircuts before heading out today.

09/09/2008 - Well, the U.S. Tennis Open is finally over, as Roger Federer beat Andy Murry in straight sets to win his fifth straight U.S. Open title. After loosing his Wimbledon crown to Rafael Nadal in a classic battle, many people said he was past his dominance, looked vulnerable and just not the old Roger Federer. Wining only two minor tournaments all year, he had recently lost his world No. 1 ranking, which he held for 237 straight weeks, to Nadal, and there were still many doubters as to his ability to regain his old, dominating form and win five in a row at the US Open. However, that's just what he did, and he did it commandingly, even though we were hoping that he would be playing Nadal, who unfortunately, after playing a strong tournament, ended up loosing to Murry in the semi-final match. All in all we watched the majority of matches and enjoyed it just as much as in previous years. It is nice to think back on the days when we used to attend a lot of the tournaments live. Of course none of those players, Jimmy Connors, Ivon Lendl, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi. Bjorn Borg, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf, just to name a few, are playing anymore. Guess we are just getting old!

09/07/2008 - Had my neighbor friend over for breakfast this morning. As he will be couped up for the next 2-3 weeks with his foot problems, we thought it would be nice to provide him with a change in scenery and provide a little conversation over a football game. And a sad day it was, as Tom Brady got injured and is going to be out for the entire season. Even with his insurance, his 4-day hospital stay is going to cost him over $1,200 out-of-pocket. We sure are glad we have good insurance. I just got the bills on Connie's tests and doctor visits last month, over $2,400. So far my out-of-pocket expense is zero.

09/03/2008 - Got out today for a little gambling. Had lunch at the GVR Buffet. Got a call from my friend in the hospital in the late afternoon and found out he was being discharged and went and picked him up and brought him home. He still has an infection in his leg and foot and has to stay home for two weeks with his foot up while a home care nurse is to come every day and give him IV's to fight the infection.

09/02/2008 - Except for my visits to my friend in the hospital, we have been sticking close to home the past few days getting some reading done at the pool and watching the US Open Tennis. Connie's hip has be bothering her quite a bit these past couple of weeks and the last two days it's been especially bad. Today after going to the hospital, we went to the movies for the first time in a while to see Traitor. We thought it was good and really enjoyed it.

09/01/2008 - Where does the time go? Here it is September already, just 115 more days till Christmas. The good news is that it is already starting to get cooler here, especially at night, allowing us to keep the windows open. Yesterday, my neighbor and best friend, who is diabetic, ended up in the hospital due to an infection in his foot. Looks like they may keep him for a least 3 or 4 days. I started working on another blog [Players Club - Residents Association] a few weeks ago and finally got it to a point where I can start promoting it. I hoping to be able to use it to keep residents at our apartment complex informed on happenings, and to unite them in resolving common property issues.
