10/17/2008 - This evening we attended a free concert by UNLV's Community Concert Band at the downtown Henderson Events Plaza. It was a lovely evening with a beautiful harvest moon and a temperature in the mid 70's. This was the first time we have been to one of this groups concerts and it was excellent. The band is open to any student or Las Vegas area resident who wishes to perform in a concert band. Formed in January of 1987, the band's 85-plus members range in age from high school to senior citizen. The group is aimed at anyone, with high school or college band playing experience, who wants to have fun and practice playing skills in a concert group setting. The band plays a wide variety of music and performs on and off-campus concerts each semester. The band was conducted by UNLV's Associate Director of Bands, Anthony LaBounty. However, this evening we got a special treat, as four additional conductors, some Masters students, some pursuing Doctorate Degrees, and one highly acclaimed conductor from Japan, assisted by each conducting some of their favorite composers. It was a very varied performance with a wide range of music that was finished of with a set of patriotic songs.
