09/30/2009 - Again, after some reading at the pool and lunch at home we headed to the South Point to see the movie, The Inglourious Bastards. (Click the title to read our review) It turned out to be 2-1/2 hours long, so we ended up just coming home after the movie and put off our planned trip to the dinosaur exhibit until the next day.
09/29/2009 - Today we started watching a PBS Series that we started recording entitled, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea". This six-episode series was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales – from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, it is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background – rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. The photography has been absolutely outstanding. This is a MUST WATCH series. Click here for more info ... The National Parks: America's Best Idea
09/27/2009 - Spent the whole day working on putting together details for our upcoming road trip to Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.
09/26/2009 - After some book time at the pool we went in and watched the final round of the PGA Tour Championship, and what a round it was. Kenny Perry started to "tank it" about halfway through just as Phil Mickelson pulled ahead into first place. Tiger was unable to gat a birdie until the end of the round, however, by then it was too late, as Phil Mickelson ended in first place. Phil got 3 million for 1st in the tournament and Tiger's 2nd place finish won him the Fedex Championship of 10 million. It was reported later that this win put Tiger over the billion dollar mark for total earnings including endorsements.
09/24/2009 - Today was chauffeur day. This morning I was able to pay my neighbors back with driving favors. One of my friends had to have work done on his car that required it to be dropped off for the day and another friend had a minor surgical procedure and was unable to drive afterwards, requiring him to have someone drive him down and back. Later in the day Connie and I attended the opening day of the Annual Classic Car show that was held at the District. From here it moves to downtown Henderson, taking over the entire mile length of Main Street. This is a huge event that draws more than 1,300 cars each year. 09/25/2009 – Today was pretty much just another typical day; out to the pool for some spa and reading time. We then came in and watched the PGA Tour Championship. Tiger Woods is two strokes behind Kenny Perry going into tomorrow’s final round and Phil Mickelson is in third place. Sunday’s round could be interesting.
In the evening, we headed up the street to the Henderson Pavilion for a concert by the Nevada Pops under the direction of Richard McGee. They performed a variety of selections including such favorites as “El Capitan” by John Philip Sousa, “On The Trail” from the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, “Habanera” and “Gypsy Song” from Carmen with special soprano Clamma Dale, a “Broadway Showstoppers Overture” arrangement that was excellent and “America the Beautiful” sung by Clamma Dale. It was just another night of outstanding music.
09/22/2009 - Well, when it rains, it pours. In addition to the over heating problem I had to have the catalytic converter replaced. Two of my neighbors were very helpful in providing dirving services. The good news is that I now have a good garage and mechanic that I can trust that is costing me much less than what the Cadillac garage would be charging. Hopefully, this will be it for this years problems.
09/21/2009 - Had to get up early today to take my car to the garage to get the "over heating" problem fixed that occurred on Saturday. Spent the rest of the morning at the pool reading, then playing on the computer and watching movies.

09/18/2009 - Tonight we attended a free one-man piano recital of Alpin Hong. He has to be one of the most gifted pianists we have ever seen. We both agreed that we have never heard anyone play with such passion as this young man. He is not only a great musician he is an excellent showman as well. He actually makes the piano sound almost liquid. The entire performance was breathtakingly exciting. Read more ...
09/17/2009 - I've spent the last three days creating the first two chapters of a "travelogue" book that I have placed on my "Projects" blog. When completed this PDF book will contain a total of nine chapters and will include many of the pictures of family and places that I have taken since our retirement. To check it out Click here ...
09/11/2009 - Had to skip the pool today as it was our monthly trip to Walmart. Seemed like it took forever to lug up the stairs and put everything away. After a late lunch we went to the "M" and GVR where I picked up a quick $100 at the poker tables prior to going to the Henderson Symphony for the evening. Even though it was still 98 degrees, the humidity was only 12 percent (take that New England) and there was a slight breeze. We just love these outdoor events in the fall and winter months.
The symphony was great and they did a wonderful and very moving selection of Tchaikovsky, String Quartet No. 1 in D Major: entitled "Andante Cantabile", in memory of the 9/11 victims. One amazing thing about this piece is that he composed it in less than a month.
The program finished with two guest soloists performing Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra by Amadeus Mozart. Merietta Oviatt, the guest soloist on the viola was just amazing. We are never disappointed by these performances.
09/10/2009 - Continued working on updates to my blog sites and scanning some family pictures that I got from mom on our last visit to Tahoe. Spent a good part of the day vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning. The place was pretty filthy from all the wind we have had lately. It is amazing how much "dust accumulates when you live in the desert.
09/09/2009 - Finished the book I've been reading these past few weeks, "Alantis Found" by Clive Cussler. At first I didn't think I was going to like it, but it was quite unusual and turned out to be a very good page turner. Connie and I both gave it four stars. See my review. Spent the remainder of the morning making some much needed updates to my two photo blogs. Went GVR for lunch, crabcakes and Caesar salad, and a special 090909 poker promotion in the poker room. If you "flopped" four nines (with) two in you hand, you won $9,999 dollars. Two people won it, but I was not so lucky.
09/07/2009 - I finally finished the inventory today, made copies on disk and placed it and some other important documents into our safety deposit box. The weather has finally started to cool down a little and it has been real nice at the pool lately. I have to admit that this years' Open Tennis matches have been real good with some "huge" upsets of top ranked players. We have really enjoyed.
09/06/2009 - After some reading at the pool, I continued working on the inventory and watching tennis with Connie.
09/05/2009 - I started working on a project I had been putting off for more that two years. Completing an inventory of all our "stuff" for insurnance purposes in case of a fire. After going through the apartment and listing everything, I then tried to come up with original purchase dates, purchase cost, resale value and replacement value. Finally, I took pictures of each room, plus individual pictures of real important or valuable stuff such as jewelry, etc.
09/04/2009 - After the pool we headed over to the Silverton Casino to use up some coupons. Ate in their Sundance Cafe which was offering a "Surf & Turf" special that included a delicious homade tomato soup, 8 oz. steak with fried shrimp, glass of wine, and a huge strawberry shortcake for desert for $14.99. With a 2-1 coupon it cost me $20 including tip. Such a deal. It was then over to the "M" and then back home for some more of the U.S. Open Tennis
09/03/2009 - Spent yesterday and this morning putting together a trip-tik on the AAA.com site for a trip we are planning in early October with a neighbor friend. Our final destination is the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque via Utah and Arizona. On the way we are going to hit Zion National Park, Bryce National Canyon, the Escalante Petrified Forest in Utah and then the north rim of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley in Arizona. On the way home from Albuquerque we want to stop at Sedona, Arizona again. We were there last year and didn't get to see enough.
09/01/2009 - I spent most of the last three days working on "computer stuff". Deleting old files, downloading up-to-date drivers for my hardware, and backing up pictures, programs and data. Connie has been watching the early rounds of the U.S. Open Tennis.
