A Daily Diary - "January 2010"

01/31/2010 - Here it is the end of another month already. This month, starting out with a week long visit from my cousin seemed like an unusually busy one. Where does the time go. I spent the morning finishing up the last of my yearly backup chores. We then went to the "M" and ate at the Red Cup Cafe. Though we had not been expecially pleased on previous visits, we tried two "Chinese" dishes that we both agreed were absolutely excellent. After lunch I played poker while Connie played the last two sessions of her slot tournament. We have to go back tomorrow to see if she won anything. Came home, had desert for dinner over some TV and went to bed.

01/30/2010 - This morning we went over to the grand opening of Henderson's new senior center to get new ID badges, tour the facilities and sign up for some upcoming excursions. It is a great facility, however it's about 10 miles further (round trip wise) than the old facility so I not sure we will use it much. The good thing is I can do most things I need to do online. It was then back to our complex for a meeting with representatives from DirectTV; as they just finished placing satellite dishes on all of our buildings. After eating the free lunch that they provided I signed up, saving $45.00/month for the same package that I currently have with COX Cable. Plus they gave us a $50 gift card to Target for being one of the first 10 people to sign up. Such a deal! It was then over to the "M" for the first two sessions of Connie's slot tournament.

01/29/2010 - I spent the morning working on weeding through several years worth of back-up disks, throwing away stuff that was no longer needed. I whittled down nearly nearly 75 CD's worth of programs and data to about 10. In the process I also discovered some files that I had thought I had lost, making this project very worthwhile. We had pizza for lunch and watch some movies and TV shows before heading out to the "M" so Connie could sign up for a free slot tournament. After signing up they provided free drinks and hot appetizers. We met another couple while sitting around and they offered to have us over for a cookout in the future.

01/28/2010 - I had an appointment to get the tires rotated on the car in the morning. Naturally, this free rotation turned into a $90 job. It started off with a stud that was frozen. Then I had the guy do a diagnostic check on some of the computer readouts I had been getting. That alone was $60 and didn't really come up with anything definitive. Went to the "M" in the afternoon. Neither of us won anythng. Came home, watched TV and went to bed.

01/27/2010 - Today was another "rain" day so I decided to take care of some errands I've been putting off. I picked up my neighbor and headed out. One of our stops was at the brand new Henderson Senior Center to get some new ID's and sign up for a couple of upcoming excursions. I then made a stop at Huntington Press to pick up our 2010 Coupon book. The last stop was at the Las Vegas County Court house to contest a ticket I received a couple of weeks ago for no Handicap Sticker displayed. I got it removed - a savings of $388. This really made my day. Came home, popped a pizza in the oven and watched movies and shows on TV with Connie.

01/26/2010 - Kind of a nothing day. Normal morning stuff on the computer. I made bruchettas for lunch and we watched a Netflix movie, "The Human Stain" with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. Much better than we thought it was going to be. Caught up on some more TV shows and went to bed.

01/25/2010 - Today was another day in the mid 60's; Ididn't even have to wear a jacket when I went out. Today was an errand day. The post office to mail out some more books to Cheryl, Tom and Bonnie.\, the Hallmark store, library and GVR for a free buffet lunch and a little gembling entertainment. I made what Connie lost.

01/24/2010 - Even though it was a nice day, in the 60's, we decided to stay home and watch the NFL Playoffs. Though both were great games, we thought that the 2nd game between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings was outstanding, expecially since the Saints won. We were also ruting for the Colts against NY in the first game. It was a good afternoon. After the games we watched a Netflix movie that our neighbor had given us titled, "Driven to Kill" with Steven Seagall. Click here for our review ... Driven to Kill.

01/23/2010 - I had to go out and run some errands this morning and took my camera with me.  Even though we had over 2-inches of rain over the past several days, the mountains around us received up to four feet of snow depending upon the elevation. I spent a good part of the day working on my Travelogue Blog site updating and adding new destinations that we have visited.

01/22/2010 - It looks like the rain has let up, just a few sprinkles and an occasional thunderstorm predicted for today. That's a good thing. Yesterday there was a lot of street flooding. In the last four days we have already received more rain (1-1/2 inches) than we got all last year. Might go out this afternoon and do another movie just to "get out".

01/21/2010 - Rain and more rain. Today was the heaviest of the past three days, nearly 3/4 of an inch. We decided to stay home again and watch some movies and prerecorded TV shows. We had turkey wraps for lunch and finished up the beef bourguignon with hot biscuits for dinner over the Netflix movie, "Marine 2."

01/20/2010 - More rain. After a day of sittng around and doing nothing, Connie made a big breakfast with waffles and sausage. We decided to go see the movie Avatar. Having listened to reviews provided by my brother and a few of my neighbors, we decided to go see it in an IMAX theater. We were not disappointed. This had to be the most visually impressive movie we've ever seen. Click here for our review ... Avatar.

01/18/2010 - Rain. We did our monthly shopping at Walmart. Seemed like we hadn't been for a while - it took forever to bring everything into the house and put everything away. I cooked the ingrediants for Beef Bourguignon and threw them into the crock pot while we headed to the "M" for a little relaxation. For dinner I served the beef bourguignon on a bed of linguini and watch the 2-hour opening of "24", one of our favorite TV series.

01/17/2010 - Normal morning routine. I then cutup some chicken breasts and made chicken strips, cooked a squash and some chicken fried rice to eat over one of the NFL division football games. After the game we watched a Netflix movie, "Monster-In-Law". It was funny. We then had dinner over the "Golden Globes". After the awards show we watched a new pilot called "Human Target", which looked promising.

01/15/2010 - Finally finished working on my "photo" reorganization and backup project. Considering that I started this more than a year ago, I'm glad to have it done. I now have all of the folders commonly identified and backed up - all 30,000 photos. I also added the rest of the chapters for my book to my Travelogue Diary blog.

01/14/2010 - Normal morning routine. Received a call from mom in regards to the book she just received in the mail. She loved it! Went to the "M" and had the lunch buffet. I won a few dollars at poker and Connie lost a few at slots. Came home and had apple pie for dinner. Received a call from Patti, who just received her book. Watched TV and went to bed.

01/13/2010 - I spent a good part of the day working on backing up and reorganizing my photos on the computer; a project that I started more than a year ago and still have not finished.  Though this has been a time consuming project, when I'm done I will be able to identify and locate just about anything I've taken over the past 10 years. Speaking of pictures, here is one of a great blue Heron that my cousin John posted on his web page today that I really liked.

01/12/2010 - My neighbor friend Jim had his floppy drive on his laptop "die" a couple of weeks ago, so today I took him one that I had bought for my old computer that I wasn't using and installed it for him.  After taking care of some more errands, I came home and made dinner and watched the latest Netflix we received entitled, "Must Love Dogs".

01/11/2010 - Did some more year-end "cleaning out" and backing up on the computer.  After a light lunch we went to the movies at Southpoint to see "Up In The Air" with George Clooney.  We thought it was pretty good.  Came home and cooked up chicken parmesan, watch some pre-recorded shows on TV and hit the sack.  It is amazing how tired we get from doing pretty much nothing.

01/10/2010 - I made a nice late breakfast of hash and eggs to eat over the Patriots game.  It was terrible.  Probably one of the worst games they have ever played. I went to the "M" for a little poker which wasn't much better than the game.  Came home, made  meatloaf, watch some TV shows an went to bed.  Pretty much a nothing day.

01/08/2010 - After our normal morning routines; computer, reading, breakfast, etc., we headed to the Kopper Keg for lunch.  This is a chain in town that we tried several years ago.  We thought the food was ok, but the service terrible. Because we had a 2-1 entree coupon we thought we would give it another try. Even though we went to a newer one, there was no improvement.  Again, the food was just ok and the service was even worse than the last time. We won't make this mistake again.  After spending the afternoon at the "M" Casino we came home and watched the Paul McCartney Concert in NY City that we had previously recorded on TV. It was so outstanding, that I went online afterward and bought both the CD and DVD to put on my MP3 player.

01/07/2010 - This morning I went to the UPS store to mail the late Christmas packages I wpent the day wrapping yesterday. Boy, is mail getting expensive. We then went to the Library to pick up some more books for Connie before heading to the movies. We saw Invictus, which we only thought was so-so in spite of a great acting job by Morgan Freeman. Click the title for a review. After the movie we went to the "M" to pick up two free bottles of wine. It was then home for dinner and some TV.

01/06/2010 - I spent all morning working on 'late' Christmas presents; designing and printing some Christmas cards to put in the mail with the book I published. I then spent the entire afternoon wrapping and packaging them. If you are interested in buying a copy of the book "Our Retirement Journey - A Travelogue" click here to go to  Lulu.com.

01/05/2010 - The day after my cousin left we stayed home and pretty much did nothing but maintenance stuff; catching up on emails, finishing some year-end computer maintenance, watching a Netflix movie and catching up on some TV shows we had pre-recorded.

02/04/2010 - John decided that he didn't need to get off to an early start for his trip back to New Mexico, so we had time for another homemade breakfast. I cooked up some bacon, green pepper and chedder cheese omelets and wheat english muffins with orange juice and coffee. It was a nice relaxing way to say goodby after such a wonderful visit. After we wished him a safe journey, I spent the rest of the morning catching up on some emails, updating this blog, and doing some more year-end computer cleanup and backup while Connie got caught up on her latest book. Connie and I then watched a Netflix movie and some shows that we had prerecorded. It wasn't long before everything seemed back to normal.

01/03/2010 - After a few hours of morning chit-chat over coffee, we finally decided to shower and get dressed so we could go out and get something to eat.  We ended up at one of our favorite "home-style" restaurants, "Mimis Cafe"  Though the three of us had wonderful breakfasts, I thought mine was the best. I had theh stuffed blueberry french toast.  After breakfast John and I took a two mile walk in the "wash" next to our complex. Connie was watching football when we got back and John and I decided to take a nap.

For dinner I decided to use up some of the leftovers in the refrigerator and made up more than a half dozen orderves.  We "popped" another bottle of champagne and sat around talking and eating until nearly 9:00 pm.  After all that we still had some chocolate coconut brownies for desert.

01/02/2010 - Today John and I took his RV to a car wash and got all of the salt, dirt and grime from his trek across country over the past 40 days. Then we went to Best Buy and gawked and many of the new electronic products on the market. After we came home we finished up the pea soup I made at the beginning of the week, sat around the living room and talked for several hours until we all decided that we needed naps before we headed out to dinner. We had dinner at the "Tides Oyster Bar" seafood restaurant at GVR.  The fried oysters we had for an appetizer were outstanding.  We all had a different meal and everyone was extremely pleased with their meal. We even got a chocolate torte cake to bring home for desert. Sat around and traded stories till it was time to go to bed.  Just another nice relaxing day.

01/01/2010 - NEW YEAR"S DAY - I cooked a late morning breakfast consisting of ham, pepper & cheese omlets, wheat english muffins and juice which we ate while we watched the Tournament of Roses Parade. Some traditions never die. John and I then went over to "Camper's World" and a couple of other RV places looking for some stripped hub cap cover nuts that he needed for his RV. No luck! Went to a local RV park and dumped his tanks and took on some fresh water. I made lunch from some of the leftovers in the refrigerator. After sitting around talking most of the afternoon I prepared dinner that consisted of steamed cauliflower and homemade chicken fingers. In the evening John retreated to his RV and Connie and I went to the "M" for a little play. I made $25 and Connie lost $5.
