06/30/2008 - We ended this busy month by going to lunch with a neighbor at Ventano's Italian Corner & Oyster Bar. We shared their signature appetiser, Shrimp on a Stone" and the Baked Oysters. Then we all had the Eggplant Parmesan. After this delicious meal we went to GVR and pickup up nearly $400 gambling. A perfect way to end the month.
06/29/2008 - Today we braved the 111-degree temperatures to attend an outdoor concert put on by the City of Belfast School of Music's Big Band and Youth Concert Band. On this, their first American tour, these bands were scheduled to play for only two audiences, one here in Henderson, NV, and the other at Disneyland in California. Though we both thought the 1-1/2 performance was outstanding, the temperatures were getting to both the audience and the performers, in spite of the temporary misters that were employed around the seating area. I literally burned my hand opening the car door after the concert. Click here for more ...
06/27/2008 - No time for the pool today. We had errands to run, Connie went to the beauty shop, the we went to the movies to see "Wanted". We were kind of mixed on this one. We liked the fast-paced action and the photography and special effects were excellent, however, the story was a little far out. In addition the ending was just a little weird. The good thing is we don't demand much from a movie other than to be just entertaining, and it was certainly that. Next, it was off to GVR casino for some gambling and dinner. We both had a 16-oz Rib-eye steak dinner that was delicious. With coupons and comps, total cost of movie, popcorn and drinks, and dinner with tip - $16.00. After dinner we then made nearly $500 playing slots and poker. God, I love this place.
06/26/2008 - Tonight we attended a wonderful free jazz performance at the Henderson Events Center by Coalition. This group played a broad palette of musical techniques and styles yielding original jazz fusion compositions as well as several well known compositions that light up the night with great sound. Keyboardist Tony Branco has a Master's Degree in Jazz Composition from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, during which he taught courses in jazz and directed ensembles. He performs often and teaches in Las Vegas. Before forming Coalition in the 70s, Tony played with Miles Davis alum "Philly" Joe Jones in many jazz clubs on the East Coast.
06/17/2008 - Today was 105 again, so after some pool time we retreated inside to watch a couple of movies we had taped prior to watching the NBA finals. What a sports week it has been. We didn't think anything was going to eclipse Tiger's win at the US Open - Wrong. In a total dismantlement of the Lakers, they just blew them away 131-92 to win their 17th NBA title. It was just a phenomenal display of defense, pick and roll offense, and three-point shots. Even at the line, they only missed one shot in 22 attempts. We even celebrated early by having a Strawberry ice cream sundae during the game.

06/16/2008 - We had two of our neighbors over for breakfast while we watched the 18-hole playoff round of the US Open Championship between Tiger and Rocco Mediate. It seemed like we all wanted both of them to win. "This is probably the greatest tournament I've ever had," said Woods after conquering Mediate on the sudden death 19th hole. After looking back over the years and taking everything into consideration, we felt that it had to be the best, most exciting tournament we have ever watched, a feeling that seemed to be shared by everyone. 06/15/2008 - What a great Father's Day! First off, we went to the Jazz Sunday Brunch at Terra Verde Italian restaurant at Green Valley Ranch. We started off with a couple of wonderfully spicy Bloody Marys. Then we both had the open-faced lobster and asparagus omelet. They were served with a side of lobster sauce and some of the best breakfast potatoes (with fried onions and peppers) that we've had since moving here. The jazz guitarist was excellent and performed a couple of songs by Louis Armstrong that were so good that they brought tears to your eyes. After a few hours of poker and slots, where Connie won $200, we then headed home to watch the 4th round of the US Open. After struggling through the first 9, blowing his lead and ending up two strokes behind the leader, Woods again pulled it out with a fantastic birdie on the 18th to force a 18-hole playoff on Monday with Rocco Mediate to decide the title. Again, just a magnificent performance by Woods. Unfortunately the rest of the evening didn't go so well as the Celtics weren't quite so lucky and will have to try and win the NBA title at home Tuesday against the Lakers.
06/14/2008 - After some pool time we headed to the clubhouse for an "ice cream social". It was a make your own sundae with 12 kinds of ice cream and all the toppings. I had cheesecake ice cream with strawberries and hot fudge sauce and Connie had a butterscotch sundae. They were really good. It was then off to the casino where Connie won $100 and I won $40, then back home to watch the third round of the US Open. Again Tiger Woods was just unbelievable. Playing with unbearable pain he made three unforgettable shots, turning in what will be one of the most memorable performances in a major Saturday. Coming from 5 shot down, he played the final six holes in 4 under - and that included a bogey, with a 30-foot eagle on the 18th for a 1-under 70 and his first 54-hole lead in the U.S. Open since 2002. We just don't know how he did it!
06/13/2008 - Today we spent the entire afternoon, along with thousands of other fans, watching the play of the Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott during the second round of the 108th U.S. Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course (South Course) in San Diego, California. We were just amazed, though we probably shouldn't have been, at the 2nd round play of Tiger Woods. After the first 9 holes he came back from 7 down to 2nd place after a blazing final nine hole score of 30, nearly tieing the course record of 29.
06/12/2008 - We went to the Hendeerson Events Plaza to see the Celebrity City Chorus. This is a group of local women who enjoy singing a capella four-part harmony, barbershop style. This evening's performance, which started off with a full color guard supplied by Nellis Air Force Base, was filled with patriotic songs in honor of upcoming Flag Day. By the time we got home, we were too tired to watch the Celtic's NBA game and decided to watch it first thing in the morning since we had it on tape. P.S. Yeah - Wow! They WON.
06/11/2008 - After another all-you-can-eat shrimp and crablegs buffet we went down to the Green Valley Ranch pool for the Wednesday night Jazzz Concert. Jazz violinist Michael Ward, saxophonist Kyle Turner put on a wonderful performance. This was the first time we had the opportunity to listen to a jazz violinist and really enjoyed.
06/10/2008 - Again today, high winds and temperatures. Go Figure. The temperature today reached 102 degrees and our pool was was stilled closed due to some vandalism last Saturday. Some kids empties a fire extinguisher into the pool and messed it up so bad that it had to be completely drained. Even though we were rooting hard, the Celtics lost to the Lakers 87-81, blowing an early 4th quarter lead.
06/09/2008 - Today was pretty much an errand day. Went to the Bank, the post office, got gas ($4.39/gal - $65 to fill the tank and it wasn't empty), visited the library purchased some items at Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble was the only deal because Connie had a gift card that she had received from her brother for Christmas. I also found a 25% off coupon on the Internet. As a result she got a new journal, two crossword puzzle books, a hard-back novel, and a magazine for $3.70Later in the day we had a late lunch at our favorite oriental buffet spot (Buffet Asia) with a neighbor. This buffet features Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Mongolian BBQ, Dim Sum, & a great sushi bar. Tempura bar, crab legs, oysters, miso soup, chicken, BBQ ribs, sweet and sour pork and all Asian favorites. They even had frogs legs, lobster pieces and oysters the last time we went for dinner.
06/08/2008 - This morning we watched what was probably one of the strongest tennis matches we've ever witnessed, with Rafael Nadal crushing Roger Federer 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, to win his fourth French Open. It was really unbelievable to watch. Click here for more ... Next on our agenda was the NBA Playoffs. After a nail-biting finish it's final, the Celtic's head to the West coast up 2-0. After amassing a 24 point lead, making me feel quite comfortable for a change, the Lakers slowly chipped it away reducing it to single digits by the two-minute mark. Paul Pierce sunk two critical free throws with 22.8 seconds left as the Celtics held off a late comeback from the Lakers, for a game ending 108-102. Click here for more ...
06/06/2008 - Tonight we attended the Henderson symphony at the new Henderson Events Plaza in downtown Henderson. This is the first time we have attended anything at this location and were really impressed with how nice it was. Tonights program was entitled "An Evening of Light Classics and includedMarriage of Figaro Overture, Selection from Carmen (Suites One and Two), Cavalleria Rusticana, St. Louis Blues, and four Strauss waltzes including The Emperor's Waltz, Thunder and Lightning, Radetsky March and the ever famous Blue Danube. The weather was perfect, in the low 80's with a slight breeze, making for a lovely evening.
06/04/2008 - Watched the Celtics win the first game of the NBA Playoffs against our arch rival the LA Lakers. A great evening of entertainment. To read more go to One Down - Three To Go
06/01/2008 - Here it is June already; where does the time go? The weather here today was sunny and clear in the mid 90's with just a slight breeze, obviously allowing us to once again reinact our daily ritual of reading and catching a few rays by the pool. Looks like we will be here in the desert for at least another year; today we signed another 12-month lease. It's hard to believe that we have been here five years already. However, with all the bad weather the rest of the country has been having, rains, floods, heavy winds, tornatoes, hurricanes, etc., it certainly makes us feel that moving here was a good decision.
